after a short hiatus, misericord is back for 2010 with more off-kilter missives for back-room massive. first up is the welcome return of mr al usher. his >gnanfou< ep christened the label back in the summer of 2007 and was rapturously received / licensed all over the place. al has been quiet of late, busy being a dad and doing a proper job, but prins thomas put his out of the loop gem >lullaby for robert< out again in 2009 to much acclaim. this new release >hilversum< is very much its follow-up: al at his most unashamedly gorgeous, re-contextualising an old deutsche neue welle melody and weaving it into a characteristically intricate and beautiful piece of post-balearic loveliness. for the flip we commissioned a remix from one of europes most exciting new producers, barcelonas john talabot.

italian musician, sound designer and dj based in venice, where he fights a reckless war against his winged neighbours: the infamous pigeons of st. marks square, who sometimes try to sabotage williams already unstable vintage synths. bottins sound is a blend of seventies disco, early eighties electro, italian giallo movies atmospheres and can be roughly defined as horror disco. among his collaborations: stevie kotey (chicken lips, bear funk), makossa & megablast, richard dorfmeister... bottin already released on bear funk, italians do it better, and after his contribution to the cosmic balearic beats vol. 1 compilation, this is his real 12 inch debut for eskimo.

westpark unit (aka herb lf & ingo saenger) are back with their annual release on farside records after some work for labels like dessous, tjumy, future classic or fear of flying. this time, they provide 4 brandnew trax for the vinyl edition. more forever might be familiar to a few people that followed the music of westpark unit over the years. the tune is a special rework of their first ever limited 12inch release forever back in 2002 on draft recordings. more forever took some of the original deep harmonies, keeps parts of the piano loop and the beautiful sampled hook and should be a soulful bomb on the 2009 floors. even deeper 45 grows and grows with a very intensely chord, takes you on a trip with its driving bassline and is the other dubby deep house tune here. the first demo version received some nice feedback / chartings / plays from djs like dplay, matt flores or shur i kan. while speaking of house (not house), jam hot and familiar sequence are musically caught somewhere in between the styles. jam hot might be more funk than house with sexy 104 bpm, is bouncing like hell and keeps the crowd shaking and moving. familiar sequence appeals to the disco fanatics out there, has a little of a balearic vibe and is also keeping things slow. both tunes are the perfect startup into the night. we think this is the right tempo for party anyway.

after the success of their collaboration with paul thomas on last years festival anthem >arena<, mark knight and funkagenda join forces once again on one of the most eagerly anticipated tracks showcased at this years miami wmc.
>good times< is the feel good anthem of the summer comprising of a modest intro with a warbling bass line driving slowly through collecting sounds, before opening up into an edgy synth stab and finally the insanely catchy vocal hook >these are the good times<! the track drops back in like a speeding locomotive train going full steam ahead, with cleverly placed percussion, fx and siren sounds soaring to create an intense rhythm.
on the flip, >flauta magica< shows the diversity of these two acclaimed producers when they get in the studio together. taking a different route from the lead track and concentrating more on the groove, >flauta magica< chugs along nicely with an almost tribal percussive feel to it. the excellent chanting vox sample, reminiscent of the early house sound, keeps the groove rolling along into the drop. taking the lead from the tracks name, a whistling flute riff drops elevating the musical vibe to a new balearic level.

temple of the sun is the fifth ep of the london based french producer harold boue. after his last track >chandler bing< has been charted by erol alkan and played by simian mobile disco, rex the dog (for bbc), mattie safer... abstraxion is creating here an universe of mixed up dark and brightness with warped-schizophrenic bassline. this ep reaches the diversity of abstraxions universe: from peaktime techno (b and s, temple of the sun), disco-balearic (slices), to beatless deep ambient (vampyros lesbos). abstraxion is composing an organic music, only with old analog synthesizers, in a gesture of unmitigated desire: a desire for the elementary beauty of techno.

fritto morto 003 sees gatto frittos invisible college getting a timely re release. originally out on dissident, invisible college has been a big record for beardos from hoxton to hawaii. it became a firm favourite at londons disco bloodbath and cosmic truth nights aswell as across the pond at harveys sarcastic parties. a long acoustic guitar driven balearic trip propelled by synth bass, disco toms, clavinet and fender rhodes with a summery disposition. the b side your dreams are my nightmares is 9 minutes of highlife guitars squalling 101s, backwards vocals and white noise snares with a pure pop number buried underneath...the sort of thing paul simon and doris norton might have made if they had been sectioned and were in a music therapy group together.

some notorious electronic music talents have started their careers as percussionists. and so did yaya, but his tale is different to all the rest. his new release for desolat takes a unique, upbeat approach to 4/4 beats: combining heartfelt benin influences - samples from dialogue and traditional ballads - with the stretched-out tension and release of balearic and the bubbling pops and stutters of tech house, plus the occasional kickback to a commodore64 high score melody. raised in turin, italy, rhythm was his lifeblood for yassin legali, also known as yaya, from an early age. his father was the lead vocalist and percussionist for mbamina, a band consisting of musicians from benin, zaire, italy and cameroon. mbamina released eight albums, collaborated with artists like manu dibango and salif keita, were sponsored by paco rabanne and played all over africa, including a show for the presidents of senegal and france. their final show was with james brown in paris in 1985 - the year yaya was born. well-versed in his fathers legacy, yaya grew up playing drums and djembe, and at the age of 15, began performing as a percussionist in turin clubs. just one year later, he was already djing, playing funk, soul, afrobeat, house and garage. manu dibango and fela kuti found a spot in his crate next to records by masters at work and dimitri from paris: contrasts of rhythm and structure that pervade his music to this very day.

te amo is a forgotten gem originally released on the volumex label back in 1993 and then licensed to the legendary vc records in the u.k. with mixes from john digweed. this was a huge anthem back in the early 90s full of balearic passion and happiness which is often missing in todayÆs music. but lets not get carried away in the memories of the past and check out these brand new mixes. in fact, the record makes a fine return to todays scene thanks to brilliant interpretations from two of our favourite djs/producers out there: hotly tipped paolo mojo and tapesh.to round off one pretty nifty package, the original caliente mix is enclosed also. and this still sounds as relevant today as it did almost two decades ago. a blast from the past indeed! very similar to releases on record labels like cr2, defected and toolroom.

dave dk needs no introduction, since his debut moodmusic album “lights and colours” he s been busy travelling the world preaching his trademark electronic deep house sound and remixing florian kruse, tigerskin and seva k for labels baalsaal, global underground and dirt crew among other things. for the new moodmusic release dave packs 2 tracks from the album in new edits as well some major remix biz from ada (areal, irr) and russ gabriel (mobilee, ferox) remixing cinema paraiso was ada s choice, the epic floating, almost balearic feel to it fitted perfectly the fine hand of ada and her perfect production values. starting with a rough 303 bassline, building an intense but deep affair buidling into a hypnotic frenzy of old school acid and modern electronics ! from the feedback from the few selected djs who got their hands on this gem, ada s remix is allready in groove mag top-10 ! the b-side coimbra, a rocking house belter with neat sample editing and the dave dk bassline juggling between the low end and the ultra low sub. russ keeps much of the original intact, deepening the groove with his funk injected beats and some lush detroit influenced chord action like we know and love from him. as a bonus we include the original mix for those vinyl lovers out there !

the answer (gipsy kink mix) working around the rousing vocals of a mysterious anthem resulting into a stomping analogue workout. heavy heavy drums form the basis for a true oldschool-meets-newschool floorfreaker! manolo - timeless signs breathing new life and energy with this slow burning acidic jam. an ideal opener or indeed closer to the party, the free-flowing balearic vibes are coming on strong, as we are locked in on this one.

crimea x is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, dj rocca (ajello, super sonic lovers, maffia sound system) and jukka reverberi from 90s italian glam cult rockers, giardini di mir, who have often have been compared with the sound of mogwai, arab strap, godspeed you! black emperor. hailing from the far flung cosmos of reggio emilia, italys coolest post rock, cosmic disco outfit, crimea x launch a stellar ep of musical gems titled, phoros, get ready for pure, spaced out balearic bliss as the italo duo take you on a round trip journey to the electro cosmos and back. dj rocca and jukka were brought together by the common passion for cosmic imaginary soundscapes, where kraut rock fuses with the predilection for marxist thought and political stories of last century. the end product is a tantalising myriad of musical styles and tongue in cheek ethos, satirising the sociopolitical climate of our modern era.

london s idjut boys (dan tyler & conrad mcconnell) and rune lindbaek of oslo are meanderthals. as longtime friends and fans of each other’s music they have discussed the idea of working together in a musical context for years and in 2008, they finally began to make those ideas a reality. throughout the year they traveled back and forth between oslo and london to create their debut album, desire lines. the album is due the 11th of may. but before that, this 12&#8243,,, taster of the andromeda (album track) as well as a idjut boys remix) a meanderthal is a theory by matthew tiessen about a human that is always in the way of others. whether it be the person on the wrong side of the escalator, the person walking slowly, the person bicycling on the pavement, it is essentially the person that stops the flow of urban daily life. on the contrary, lindbaek, tyler and mcconnell s definition does not see this person as a threat, but as a person that is completely in his own world – a slacker, musically on his own. this could also be a good description of lindbaek and the two idjut boys. meanderthals serves mellow balearic disco. a warm and dreamy blend of dub, folk, prog, kraut, psychedelia and 70s west-coast combined to invent an organic, slanted, and proggy feel. recorded live, the album features contributions from good friends, including pete z (dj harvey) on keyboards, des morgan (yamwho?) on drums and percussion, malcolm jospeh (grace jones) on bass, per martinsen (aka mental overdrive) on percussion and raj gupta (laj & quakerman) as sound engineer
